Book AppointmentWhat Is Dry Eye?
Dry eye is a common eye condition that can develop when the quality or quantity of your tears changes. In severe cases, dry eye could increase your risk of corneal damage, affecting your vision.
Our approach to dry eye care is to detect symptoms early and provide a strategy to help address your discomfort. In some cases, we might recommend regular treatments to help maintain your eye comfort.
Understanding Your Tears
Your tear film is made up of 3 essential ingredients:
- Mucus, which spreads tears evenly across your eye’s surface.
- Water, which hydrates your eyes and washes away particles and bacteria.
- Oil, which seals in your tears and helps stop them from evaporating too quickly.
You can develop 2 types of dry eye: evaporative dry eye and aqueous deficiency dry eye.
Evaporative dry eye can occur when an issue affects the oil content in your tears, causing them to evaporate more quickly. Aqueous deficiency dry eye can occur when there isn’t enough water in your tears to hydrate your eyes. One of the most common issues that can affect your tears is meibomian gland dysfunction, which can reduce the oil in your tears and is a common cause of evaporative dry eye.
